DEATH OF MAJOR J. REID
HAMILTON IDENTITY

An early resident of Hamilton and a prominent figure in military circles for over 40 years, Major James Reid died at his home at Clau delands this morning, aged 89 years. The late Major Reid was (born in Berwickshire, -Scotland. When 13 yea-rs of age he enrolled as a bugler in the First Berwickshire Ride Volunteers, and following military service in England, he came to -New Zealand in 188 G.
Scon •after 'his arrival in the Dominion Major Reid was appointed brigade adjutant c.f the Auckland district and later given command of the brigade with the acting rank of lieutenant-colonel.
Later, Major Reid came to Hamilton and formed and commanded the Hamilton Light Infantry Volunteers from 1887 to 1900. .He also formed the second :v:l third companies of the Waikato Mounted Rifles. lie was the holder of several decorations, including Queen Victoria’s medals for long service.
