TAURANGA AIRPORT

ENLARGEMENT OF FIELD PROGRESS OF WORK The final development scheme in connection with the aerodrome at Whareroa, Tauranga, is well in hand Tile contractors for the work are Messrs. Butler and Carroll, of Hamilton. The area on which they are operating comprises 130 acres, and the new aerodrome when completed will be three times as large as the existing field. The maximum runway will be 1450yd5., in an east to west direction, compared with 650yds. at present. For the other runways, the average length will not be less than 1200 yards, and these - will provide for machines landing and taking off from any direction.

The present contract means the moving of approximately 200,000 yds. of soil. The time of the contract ii about six months, and everything possible is being done to expedite the work in preparation for sowing down grass this spring. When this work is completed the field will total 190 acres.

The Public Works Department has erected a modern radio station, which has been in operation for some time. A temporary administration building will be erected shortly.
