CYCLIST KILLED

ALLEGED HIT-AND-EUN

YOUNG MAN ARRESTED (Per Press Association.) INVERCARGILL, this day.. Struck while riding a bicycle in Gladstone about 7.30 o'clock last night, by a half-ton truck, Arthur Sydney Harper, aged 56 years, was killed, apparently instantaneously. The driver of the truck failed to stop, accelerated at a fast pace and disappeared. Mr. Harper's young son, who was cycling in front of his father, was also struck, but was only slightly injured. When the motor truck struck Mr. Harper, he was flung into the air, his head striking the windscreen oi the truck. As he fell the crash was heard by nearby residents. The police were immediately notified. A piece of glass was found on the road and, with this as a clue, exhaustive enquiries were made with the assistance of three transport department inspectors and two city traffic inspectors. The inquiries lasted all night and early this morning a truck was ioun.. in a garage with a broken wind screen and a broken left hand lamp. Wi.h this additional c.ue, . actives pursued investigations and aroused the young man from his bed this morning. After an interview, the man was arrested.
