In a hard, loose forward game Wairoa retained the Barry Cup on Saturday by defeating Poverty Bay, the challengers, by 20 points to nine. The game was a forward struggle right throughout, the backs of both teams seeing very little of the ball. The visiting pack had a decided advantage in weight over Wairoa, and gained the ball in the majority of eases from the scrums and line-outs. Honours went to Poverty Bay in the first half, but in the second spell, and assisted by a strong wind, Wairoa gained the supremacy. Wairoa's points were the result of four converted tries, while the visitors’ score was made up of three penalty kicks, O'Brien securing the nine points on his own. Even First Half Wairoa kicked oil’ against the wind and carried play down to the opposition territory, but an infringement on their part enabled the visitors to clear. After 10 minutes’ play Wairoa were awarded a penalty kick from midway between the visitors’ 25-yd. line and the half-way mark. C. Hawea’s attempt fell short and the ball travelled out to Brady, the Wairoa second five-eighth, who short-punted infield and, with, a great burst of speed, Powdrell beat the opposition to the ball and scored near the posts. Another penalty kick against Wairoa from almost on the half-way line and in front of the posts saw O’Brien’s attempt hit one of the uprights and bounce back into play. Wairoa then attacked and carried play Ui the Bay goal line. From the linecut the visitors broke through and a long kick upheld looked dangerous for Wairoa. but the full-back. Harvey, outpaced the opposition and cleared with a good line kick. At this stage MeGrannachan, one of the visiting forwards, was forced to retire with an injury to his face. Holmes replacing him. Poverty Bay took the lead when O’Brien put another penalty kick over from outside the opposition 25-yd. line and near the side-line. Poverty Bay .. .. tactics and confining play to Wairoa territory.
Soon after the resumption Wairoa scored their second try when, from a scrum near the opposition 25, the forwards carried play up to the Bay goal line and C. Hawea secured and bullocked his way over lor a try under the posts. Brady converted. Wairoa .. .. ..10 Poverty Bay .. .. 0 At this stage G. Harvey, the Wairoa full-back, was playing a great game, and his long line-kicks relieved many an embarrassing situation for his team. Unexpected Try Wairoa scored an unexpected try when, from a scramble in the visitors' 25, the ball was kicked behind the posts and rebounded off a Poverty Bay player for Pilmer, who had followed up fast, to pounce on it. Brady added the extra points with a good kick. Wairoa 15 Poverty Bay .. .. 6 Another penalty kick against Wairoa enabled O’Brien to kick his third goal of the match from outside the opposition 25 and against a strong wind. Wairoa 15 Poverty Bay .. .. 9 Wairoa continued to press, the forwards keeping well up on the ball and featuring in several strong dribbling rushes. From a melee in Wairoa territory the ball was kicked upfield and, displaying a good turn of speed, IMataira outpaced the opposition to gain possession and score’ a good try after running half the length of the field. Brady converted. Wairoa .. .. .. 20 Poverty Bay .. .. 9 It. Short Injured Poverty Bay retaliated and carried play into Wairoa territory. Gaining the ball from a set scrum, the visitors’ back line moved into action, the ball travelling out lo R. Short, on the left wing. After a determined run down Ihe sideline he was, grassed heavily just short of the goal line, suffering slight concussion, and was forced to leave the field. He was replaced by his brother. J. Short. The final whistle sounded with the visitors attacking and the score unchanged: Wairoa .. .. ..20 Poverty Bay .. . . !) Mr. A. E. Ellis was the referee.
