WIN FOR FIJI

FIRST N.Z. FIXTURE PIAKO LOSE BY ONE GOAL (Per Press Association.) MATAMATA, this day. The Fiji hockey team opened its tour of the Auckland province at Matamata on Saturday with a match against the Piako Hockey Association representatives, recent winners of the White Horse Cup at the Auckland Country Week tournament. The match was played at Bedford Park as the curtain-raiser to the Matnmn+nWaiuku Rugby match for the Peace Cup. There was a record crowd of hockey and Rugby enthusiasts, this being the first representative hockey match played at Matamata for over 10 years. The ground was firm and in oxcellen’ order. The game was fast and hard. Fiji emerging the winners by 2 goals lo 1.

For Fiji, Bay and Wendt goaled, and J Cottinghom scored for Piako. The two scorers played well for Fiji, as did W. Kerr and C. Laurence, who were particularly good,'clearing well on several occasions.

The game showed that Fiji has good individual players who, if they combine better in loiter matches, will be hard to beat.
