Riggs, Wimbledon champion, virtually clinched No. 1 position in the American Davis Cup team by the convincing manner in which he defeated S. Wood, Hi 8, G—l, (> —4, in 93 minutes in .the final of the Meadow Club's tournament. Riggs, won. the £2OO trophy outright, having won it three years in succession. Disgusted with his showing yesterday, live changed his tactics. He usually avoids the .net, but to-day he took the offensive.

Pate, the non-playing captain of the cup team, and Mr. Holcombe Ward, president of the United States Lawn Tennis Association, who were looking in, were delighted with his form.

It .is expected that the team will be announced during the Rye tournament next week.

The majority of American sports writers pick Parker as No. 2 and also express the opinion that Riggs and Parker may play in the doubles.

Gene Mako said to-day he did not think he had a ghost of a chance of making the learn. He had had four partners so far.
