DEFENCES OF AUSTRALIA

CABINET DROPS PLAN PERMANENT MOBILE UNIT (Elec. Tel. Copyright—United Press Assn.) (Reed. Aug. 4. 9 a.m.) CANBERRA, Aug. 3. The Prime Minister, Mr. R. G. Menzies, announced that the Government had decided to reject the proposal to establish a permanent mobile force in Australia. He added that the Government was not satisfied that there was a .proper proportion between the outlay involved, £1,875,000 in the first year, and the result. It regarded the real problem as that of effectively training and equipping the ordinary citizens- to defend Australia. The Cabinet also decided against the introduction of universal military training, and instead will take steps to intensify the training of the existing voluntary militia.
