BUDGET DEBATE
MAXIMUM IMPETUS DAY’S SIX SPEAKERS BURDEN OF TAXATION DEFENCE BY GOVERNMENT (Parliamentary Reporter.) WELLINGTON, this day. The Budget debate reached its maximum impetus in the House of Representatives yesterday, six speakers taking part. An hour is alloted to each speaker and no extensions were requested, which suggests that this privilege, which was liberally allowed in the previous debate, will be dispensed with during the discussion of the financial statement. Three members of the Opposition and three members of the Government contributed yesterday, the former basing the attack on the Budget on the imposition of new taxes which they considered an intolerable burden on the people generally and the. farming community in The argument was developed on the traditional party lines. ■ 1 - i . .: The Government members replied by asking the Opposition to suggest constructive alternatives to the policy set out in the financial statement. Mr. A. H. Nordmeyer, (Lab., Oamaru), who has taken a special interest in the social security scheme since the inception of the proposal, contended that the scheme was working out on a basis less costly than the Government had anticipated
