DEFENSIVE WEAPONS
PROVISION ON SHIPS EVENT OF HOSTILITIES (Per Press Association.) WELLINGTON, this day. A beginning has been made in New Zealand with the stiffening of certain selected merchant vessels on the New Zealand register to take defensive armament in event of the outbreak of war, said the Minister of Defence, the Hon. F. Jones, yesterday. It is for this reason the sum of £3IOO has been included in the estimates just brought down. The ships so fitted, he said, could not take the offensive as that would mean piracy, but the provision was being made simply for the protection of such merchantmen against attack.
