POTATO SHORTAGE

DOMINION-GROWN STOCKS PROVISION OF IMPORTS APPLICATIONS INVITED MINISTER’S. STATEMENT (Per Prcsi Association.) WELLINGTON, this day. Interviewed yesterday, the actingMinister of Marketing, the Hon. W. Lee Martin, said that owing to the anticipated shortage of potatoes a complete survey of stocks in New Zealand had -been made. It seemed that there were insufficient stocks, to carry the Dominion over until next season’s crop was available, and therefore the Government was prepared to accept applications for licenses to import from recognised importers. The applications, he said, would be made direct to the Collectors of Customs in the various ports cf entry, and would be forwarded to the Internal Marketing Division for consideration. The licenses might be granted in part only, and in any case the Government would allow tile importation only of such quantities as might be considered desirable in the light of the full facts. The applications, he said, should state whether sterling funds would be required for any licenses which might be issued.
