CONCERN EXPRESSED

WAIROA PIGS CLUBS LACK OF ENTHUSIASM VIEWS OF MEMBERS (Special to the Herald.) WAIROA, this day. Concern as to the future of the pig club movement ns a result of the lack of enthusiasm displayed was expressed at the annual meeting of the central body of the Wairoa Pig Club on Saturday. A statement that he was most disappointed with the past year's working was made by Mr. G. F. Hudson, officer of the Denar meat of Agriculture at Wairoa, and he pointed out that the present position war, due to the general unwillingness of members to take part in the proceedings. He did not know where the pig industry was going to finish up if the present state of .affairs continued. Mr. Hudson said that clubs must have sufficient finances to carry on the movement and unless some other assistance was .forthcoming from other people then he could not see that they were going to get very far Four out of the six clubs in the district were not functioning, and as far as he could' see were just dwindling away. There was a decided lack of enthusiasm. While he agreed with what Mr. Hudson had stated, Mr. A. A. West pointed out that the trouble was not only being experienced in the Wairoa district. There was general dissatisfaction with the pig club movement as it now stood, and he was of the opinion that the raising of the levy on pigs would provide funds. They must see if it was possible to come to some different system of organisation.

“We have six clubs in the district, ’’ added Mr. West, “and in my opinion there should l be one central breeding station from Which would be drawn all the requirements of the district.” “Policy Wrong” The chairman, Mr, A. T. Carroll, stated that the policy . was wrong. The standard of pigs had improved in the district and l it was .essential that ith-at standard be maintained and improved and the numbers, increased. The policy should be established by a controlling body in the district, which should push for quality and number. The chairman added that the Government should come to the aid of producers by giving financial assistance towards the establishment of better housing facilities. He stated that he anticipated an alteration in the pdlicy in the near future. “Until we get some system whereby the people who ,are paying the levy get some assistance from the levy then we will not get vary far,” was the opinion expressed by Mr. F. H. M'ardon.
