Maori Housing Scheme
For the purpose of Maori housing construction, the Arqwa tribal territory has been divided into two areas, one centred on Tauranga and including the whole of the coastal district, and (the other centred on Rotorua and including the inland district. The first of the new houses erected through the scheme is now in the course of erection at Awahou, while another is being built at Ohinemutu. Approximately 20 applications for assistance under the scheme were forwarded to Wellington recently for approval. The .scheme provides for native residents to apply for housing loans on special terms which enable them, provided that they are able to satisfy the loan requirements, eventually to own the houses built for them. It as hoped by means of this system substantially to improve native housing conditions in the territory,
