COAST BADMINTON
TE PUIA BEAT TOKOMARU NARROW MARGIN (Herald Correspondent.) By the narrowest of margins, only one point, the Te Puia Badminton Club deieated Tokomaru Bay on Thursday evening. The northern team travelled with the East Coast Challenge Shield, and took it back with them.
Up to the last two games Te Puia were down 26 points and two games. Even if Te Puia won those two games it looked ns though Tokomaru would win on points but the last game was an easy win for the visitors and they won the match by 174 points to 173, games nil square. In the women’s doubles Tokomaru Bay had two wins to Tc Puia’s one, and took the games between the first and second pairs with the loss of only two points. Mrs. Knox and Mrs. Squire, who were the only panto take Te Puia to advantage on the previous occasion that the two clubs met, won their match 15—2, and Misses Pepper and Atkins never lost a point. Tokomaru’s third pair were not so fortunate and went down to Misses Nelson and Purnell, 15—
The men’s doubles were 21 up and provided three close games, Tokomaru Bay winning . two of them. Tokomaru top pair, Lyle-Smvthe and Oates, who are the present holders of the East- Coast doubles title, were losing 16—19 to. Knights and Srnythe. After several long rallies the' local pair drew level and took the next two points for the game. An even better pick-up was seen in the game between the second pairs. Tokomaru’s pair, Gardner and Felton, were down 12 —19, and the match looked a carta inky for (Te Puja. The home pair changed their combination, however, t» great advantage, and Te Puia made no more points. The third match went to the visitors, 21
Before the commencement of the combined doubles, Tokomaru were leading by four games to two. Tokomaru’s fifth and sixth pairs were the only ones to win their matches, both having, easy.wins. In the other four matches, however, Te Puia reversed the order and took easy victories. One of the surprises of the evening was the easy defeat of Tokomaru’s top pair by Knights and Miss Colbert. The home pair, LyleSmythc and Mrs. Knox, could not got going and went down 3 —21. After the games were over a welcome supper was served by the home club. During supper, Mr. H. D. Gardner, Tokomaru’s president, congratulated Te Puia on their win. In replying, Mr. A. Knights thanked Tokomaru for their hospitality and said how much they enjoyed the games. Squire, 2 15; Mrs. Winter and Miss M. Webber lost to Misses D. Pepper and M. Atkins, 0—15; Misses M. Nelson and Purnell d. Mrs. Pardoe and Miss V. Pasficld, 15 —7.

It is anticipated that the East Coast Badminton championships will be commenced in about a month. A meeting of delegates from tire three Coast clubs will be held next week to make arrangements for the matches.
