A quaint incident aboard an immigrant ship on her wav lo New Zealand in 1840, as related by the ship's doctor, was mentioned by Professor J. Rutherford .in a lecture at Auckland. Hearing a commotion forward, the doctor and others found a struggling and protesting man suspended in an open hatchway by a rope around his waist. Tire other end o( the rope was held by a party ol men. who explained that the victim had been found 'battering his wife and they had decided to punish him. Ihc officer? ordered the man to be hauled up and admonished the others for taking the law into their own hands. Investigation showed that the wile had brought the trouble on herself by incessant nagging, and apparently nothing further was done about the matter.
