INTOXICATED IN CAR
ART UNION WINNER FINE OF £SO IMPOSED (Per Press Association.) CHRISTCHURCH, this day. ■One of the winners of a recent art union, Edward Vemon Reynolds, aged 21, appeared in the Magistrate’s Court this morning and pleaded guilty to a charge of being intoxicated in charge o‘f a motor Car. He was fined £SO. in default 30 days’ imprisonment with hard labour. His driving license was cancelled and endorsed and he was prohibited from obtaining another for three years.
“This is not an ordinary type of offence. The only, reason we are not making if indictable as a hit-and-run case is that we consider Reynolds was not responsible for his actions. He was too drunk,” said Sub-Inspector Packer.
A car driven by Reynolds cut a corner and hit., a cycle on the rear wheel, added Sub-Inspector Packer. The cyclist was 'thrown some' distance, but was not seriously injured. The car never stopped, said the subinspector, and although another motorist gave cha'se, he was unable to catch it, but took the number. This he reported to the police and Reynolds whs found in a restaurant. At first he denied he was Reynolds, but later admitted it. “It is a very serious case and he should be taught a lesson,” he added.
“This young man wa's fortunate to own. half of the winning ticket in 'a recent art union and (the money went to a certain extent to his head,” said counsel for Reynolds. “He is a steady, reliable worker and when he won the money he gave £SO each to his mother and brother.”
