Guaranteed Prices of Dairy Produce
Sir,—l consider it is only fair that the explanation of the Dominion president of the Farmers’ Union, Mr. Mulholland, of his attitude with regard to this matter should be made known. It will be remembered that this matter was brought up at the Kia Ora -Cooperative Dairy Company’s meeting last week. The Dominion secretary has forwarded me the following statement: —
A statement by the Prime Minister “that the Government would have to •give serious consideration to ending the guaranteed price scheme,” was replied to by Mr. Mulhoiland as follows: — (a) That he personally would Welcome the return to the industry of the control of marketing; (b) that lie assumed that if the Government did decide to hand back the control of the scheme to the industry, that it would also give the industry facilities for credit, mass marketing, etc., to carry on a similar scheme; and (c) that if Mr. Savage decided to go ahead witli the proposal to end the scheme that he should call a conference cU representatives of the industry in order that the position might be thoroughly discussed.. The foregoing clearly indicates all the Dominion president’s views, and he has taken the stand that he always takes, of endeavouring to protect tile farmers by every means in his power. C. BLACKBURN, ■Secretary, Farmers’ Union.
