THREE YEARS’ GAOL
SENTENCE ON WOMAN USE OF INSTRUMENT (Tor Press Association.) AUCKLAND, this day
“Ten years ago you stood trial in this court on a charge of murder following the death of a young woman from blood poisoning after abortion. You were found not guilty and I mu at accept the jui’y’s verdict that you were innocent,” said Mr. Justice Ostler in the Supreme Court to-day to Adeline Pyle, a domestic, aged 55, who had been found guilty of using an instrument on a young woman with intent to procure a miscarriage. “However,” continued His Honour, “that experience should have shown you .how dangerous and criminal such acts are. You were, in this case, apparently willing to take the risk and you cannot expect to be treated leniently now.” The prisoner was sentenced to three years’ hard labour. Mr. Noble submitted there was no evidence that the prisoner carried on such opei-ations regulai'ly. She was a hard worker. He asked the Court to take into consideration that she had been in custody for two months.
