INCREASED SUPPORT

; BEAUTIFYING SOCIETY y fifth annual report SUCCESSFUL YEAR “Interest in the work of the association continues to be maintained and it is receiving increased support in its activities from all quarters, 'both public and private,”, states the fifth annual report of 'the Gisborne and Diatric. Beautifying Association, to be presented at the annual meeting tomorrow night. “The association continues to oe an active organisation in tree planting and in work of a similar character end the .past year has been successful. “The statement of accounts as on March 31 shows a balance in hand of £222 9s Bd. The association is fortunate in that it is able to commence its planting season with a considerable sum in 'hand, more especially as tne centennial year will involve a considerable expenditure, and the committee has kept this in view during the past 12 months.

Planting and Development Work

: “The work of the past five years is now beginning to make itself manifest, and with the passing years will continue to add to the beauty of the surroundings of our town and district “At the instigation of our association the Gisborne Borough Council arm Gisborne Board carried out the :wotk of levelling and preparation for planting of an. area on the river frontage in Read’s quay. It is intended to conltinue the planting scheme heic during the coming season. ' “A considerable amount of work ha been done during the past season in the planting and development of the Wiaikanae Park. This work has been carried out in collaboration with the Thirty Thousand Club and the Wiaikanae Beach Improvement Society, and a considerable amount cf our funds have been devoted to providing adequate shelter for future planting work. . ■ “it.is hoped to continue our work in further planting of our streets during the coming season. The Stanley road entrance to the football ground is being levelled, fenced and prepared for planting this season.

Trees ou Coast Beaches

“The planting of trees on the Wainui and Makarori beaches has made excellent progress, more especially the latter. The long dry summer of the past season entailed some losses, but in the main the trees are beginning to show up and in a few years will become a feature in those areas. It is hoped to carry out planting at various points further up the Coast in the .coming season. In this it is hoped to obtain .the co-operation of other bodies and interested friends. “The annual shop day last September was successful in netting £7O, a welcome addition to our funds. It is hoped that this will be well maintained in the future. It is proposed to devote the proceeds of this year’s effort to the funds of the centennial celebrations, more especially to the further development of Waikanae Park.

' “The committee of the association trusts that our work will merit continued support both public and private, and that it will be able to carry out its work as in the past.”
