CHARGES IN TARANAKI YOUNG COUPLE’S STORY, (Per Press Association.) •NEW PLYMOUTH, this day. 'Denying that, he had unlawfully used an instrument; or other means, with intent to prccure the miscarriage of a woman on July 14, a Now Plymouth ■businessman was yesterday sent far trial in the Supreme Court, after evidence had been 'heard before the magistrate, Mr. W. H. Woodward. The V suppression of the accused’s n'ame Was granted on the application of his counsel, and the hail of £3OO wals renewed. Debefetrve-Sergeaht E. C. Jiarrold was granted his request for the suppression o'f thg- nOrrie of the woman concerned and that of her husband. The-,husband of the woman mentioned’., said she had been pregnant afoout five m'orrths. She had taken, ■medicine and pills in an unsuccessful ■attempt to bring about a miscarriage.

The Witness said that he and his wife went to the accused’s garage on the evening of July 14, and the accused and his wife were in the office of the garage for about half an hour. The accused'drove them home after he had received £8 from the witness. On’the following Sunday hils wife, was. in pain. Said the witness, and he took her to the surgery of Dr. I. Faris, of 'lnglewood. The doctor wrote a note' admitting her to the New Plymouth Hospital, tout before they had reached the surgery gate 'his wife said she could go no further. They returned to the'sifrgery, "Where the witness saw p'a’rt of the miscarriage and the part of an- 'instrument like that produced in court. Later his wife was taken ,to the hospital. Dr. Fari's, who described the examination of the wom'an and the miscarriage, said 'that a male Child was stillborn. It w'as obvious the miscarriage h'ad been caused toy an instrument.

Evidence was given toy the woman concerned, aged 18 years. She described what happened in the locked office in the garage. Other evidence for 'the police was given toy Dr. G. 11. Thomson, Honorary Obstetrician at the New Plymouth Hospital, and police officers, who searched the accused’s premises.
