Government and Awards
Sir. —Very properly the Government looks with horor on unions which obtain awards through the Arbitration Court and arc then unwilling to abide bv the terms. Your correspondent "Chips" must not think that the Govment is not equally horrified by its own action in paying the carpenters on the Social Security building at 'muinmtrm less than award rates; in setting up a committee, with a .juri/w -s chairman, to fix the guaranteed rp-ico for dairy produce in accordance with the principles set out in the Ac*
-n r i then paying something less; in sending round its purchasing officer of the Internal Marketing Department in ■m endeavour to buy milk at a figure which, in terms of butterfat equivalent. is less than the guaranteed priceand in disregarding the Wellington by-laws about building in fircpioo material. But the Government cannot deregister itself and it has been unable to devise any way of giving itseb a wel-deserved “kick in the mnts.”- - CONSISTENT.
