Sentence of six months’ imprisonment was imposed by Mr. Justice Blair in the Supreme Court to-day on John Richards, aged 55, managingdirector of the Dominion Auctioneering Company, who was found guilty on six charges of frualulent accounting under the Auctioneers’ Act. and one charge of theft of 2s 3d. All the charges related to transactions in fruit.
Arthur Haines, aged 35. who was found guilty on the same charges, was admitted to three years’ probation and was ordered to pay .1138 towards the costs of the prosecution.
His Honour said that auctioneers were very important persons in the community because they wore entrusted with the realisation of produce. which was the work of other people. So much of New Zealand’s income depended upon the produce if the land that any prejudicing of the due realisations touched the incomes of a great many people.
