KOALA BEARS REFUSED
CENTENNIAL EXHIBITION AUSTRAIA AN POLICY (Reed. July 25, 9 a.m.) MELBOURNE, July 25. A request by the New Zealand Government for the loan of 12 koala bears, three lyre birds, three native cats and 12 squirrels for the New Zealand Centennial Exhibition has been refused by the Victorian Chief Secretary, Mr. H. S. Bailey. He agreed to send six kookaburras, four kangaroos and four wallabies. .Mr. Bailey explained, that the lyre birds would be mounting at the time of the exhibition. In any case their export was against public policy. The same applied to koalas which also were shy and sensitive and it was doubtful whether they would stand Itihe sea transport. Squirrels and native cats were slry and unsuitable for public exhibition. .
