MAURICE TATE
FALL OF THE MIGHTY Maurice Tate, who played for England in 20 Tests against Australia and 14 against the Springboks, is now playing for Walsall in the Birmingham League. He still holds the record for the most wickets in an Anglo-Australian series, having captured 38 at an average of 23.18 on his maiden tour of the Commonwealth in 1924-25. He was a member Of D. R. Jardine’s victorious M.C.C. side in Australia in 1932-33, but was not chosen for any of the five tests. He came to New Zealand that season but did not play in the test at Auckland, where "W. R. Hammond scored 330 not out. In his 20 tests against Australia Tate’s tally of wickets was 83 at an average of 29.55. Of his 1281 overs no less than 330 were maidens. In his debut Walsall last month, bowling against Moseley, Tate began by taking three ol the first four wickets which fell. These cost him 30 runs, but there his success ended, and lie was hit for 73 runs altogether.
