THEFTS BY TRIBESMEN

PREFERENCE POR HAY LAHORE, June 8. Persistent thefts of hay by nomad tribesmen known as Odes have been reported to the Punjab Government by agriculturalists, who told a committee of inquiry that the Odes had never been known to steal money oi jewellery.

The Odes have even been known to take away hay on which cash or jewels had been hidden by farmers, leaving the valuables behind. They will steal other agricultural produce, and farmers complained that they had destroyed crops they could not steal. But the great mystery of why they do not steal money or valuables remains. The committee could not find a case in which an Ode tribesman .was even accused of stealing valuables.
