QUIST BEATS MAKO
LONG WOOD BOWI, FINAL THREE STRAIGHT SETS (Reed. July 24, 12.30 p.m.) BOSTON, July 23. In the final of the men’s singles of the Longwood Bowl lawn tennis tournament, Quist (Australia) defeated Mako (U.S.A.), o—l,0 —1, 6—2, (5—4. In the doubles the Australians, Quist and Crawfol-d, defeated the Americans, Mako and Parker, hy default. Mako was suffering from a cold which had settled in his ‘back.
- Quist’s chief strategy was to go to the net on. shots from Mako’s hackhand and then chop and volley down the forehand alley for clean aces. Quist raced through the first set in 13 minutes, winning live games in a row with the loss of eight points. The second set was almost a replica of the first. Mako braced up briefly in the third and his Shots temporarily were as accurate as Quist’s.
The Australian broke out in a rash of errors in the third set and Mako led 3-2, but Quist rallied. lie started rushing the <net and again volleying past Mako and angling overhead shots accurately. Mako played his best tennis of the tournament, but Quist was far too good. Quist is the first foreigner to win the historic Longwcod Bowl title since Gerald Patterson took it in 1925. Quist was never in danger as he ran Mako round the court, scoring placements at will.
