LIQUOR FOR NATIVE
PUBLICAN FINED SMALL PENALTY INFLICTED A charge of supplying liquor to a native for consumption off licensed premises was preferred against Cornelius Alphonsus Collins, licensee of the Waerenga-o-kuri Hotel, when he appeared before Mr. E. L. Walton, S.M., in the Police Court this morning. The charge arose out of the fatal accident at Makaraka on June 23, the Maori supplied being Ben Apaapa, one of the men in the car involved in the accident.
Senior-Sergeant J. F. H. Macnamara outlined the nature of the offence and said that, when interviewed by the police, Collins had admitted the offence.
For the defendant, Mr. G. J. Jeune said that Apaapa and another man, Mark Nepia, had had a few drinks before 6 o’clock. Apaapa was known to the defendant and. when the Maori said he was going to Gisborne to see a doctor and asked for a half-bottle of gin as he had a bad back, Collins supplied him with the liquor.
The defendant was fined £2 and costs.
