HOSTESS TO DIGGERS VISIT TO TOICOMARU BAY lIOSPIT A LIT Y RETUR NE D (Special to tlio Herald.) TOKOMAKU BAY, this clay. On Friday, Mrs. Scott, sen., Mr. and Mrs. Scott, jun.. and Miss Scott, Into of London, and now residents of Auckland, were entertained by the Maori people of Tokomaru Bay. During the Great War Mr. and Mrs. Scott's home in England was “open house” to New Zealand soldiers, and many pleasant memories are held by local {returned men who enjoyed their hospitality while on leave. Mrs. Scott, who is a descendant of the chief Waakanene, and party are at present touring the Coast, renewing old friendships. Mr. Scott, sen., owing to business reasons, was unable to accompany them. On arrival, the guests were greeted by members of the returned soldiers at the Te Puka Hotel, where they were entertained at dinner. Following this the party adjourned to the carved meeting house, where a welcome social and dance had been arranged for them. Among the Guests
Tlie Maori ladies’ committee, comprising Mesdames S. Te Ohaere. S. Collier, H. Newton, S. Bruce, P. Pewhairangi, A. B. Forrester, F. Mulligan, K. Te Ohaere, R. Taningahue, J. Grant, and W. Matahihi, welcomed the guests, little Freda Te Ohaere presenting bouquets and a buttonhole, after which, with the guests of honour, she led the grand march.
The Aroha orchestra, playing old time favourites, supplied the music for the dances. Three action .songs were given by the local Maoris. The guests also performed an action song, and Mrs. Scott, -jun., and Miss Scott, did a hula dance, which delighted the audience.
A number of speeches were made. Mr. R. G. Sherwood Hale spoke on behalf of the Europeans, Mr. A. B. Forrester for the Maori .returned soldiers, and Mr. L. Babbington for the Maori people. Mrs. Scott suitably replied. Mrs. S. Te Ohaere mhde a presentation to Mrs. Scott, as a -memento. A delicious supper was served.
