OBITUARY
MR. HENRY FIELD METHODIST CHURCHMAN Well-known as a former secretary of the New Zealand Alliance and a keen worker in the interests of the Methodist Church, Mr. Henry Field died in a private hospital in Auckland on Monday. Mr. Field who had reached the age of 85 years, hacl spent the greater part of his life in the service of his fellow-men. The deceased came to New Zealand from the Homeland, travelling to his new home in the Western Monarch and arriving in the Dominion in January, 1880. For some years lie was engaged in business on his own account, during which lime he was also actively engaged in religious ana temperence work. His enthusiasm and zeal in this cause led to his appointment in 1887 as secretary .of the New Zealand Alliance. .Mr. Field being appointed full-time secretary of the alliance three years lalcr, his headquarters being in Wellington. -In 1897 he resigned this office and recommenced business on his own account. He was instrumental in organising the Wellington Employers’ Association, later filling the position of secretary of the Wellington association and of the New Zealand Federation of Employers. Mr. Field was also a member of the Conciliation Council and held these offices until his retirement in 1905, when he undertook a two-year visit to England. Mr. Field was an active and zealous member of the Methodist Church and was one of its best known local preachers, being well-known in this connection all over New Zealand. He was president of the Local Preachers’ Association and vice-president of the Methodist Conference. The deceased was a man of high ideals and keen intellect and lived rigidly up to the ideals to which he gave so much. His later years were spent in: Gisborne, where he resided with his only daughter, Mrs. E. If. Baker.
