NEW ZEALANDERS ABROAD SYDNEY SOCIAL CLUBS ONE - 0 EGAN ISA T 1 ON PLAN (Reed. .July 13, 9 a.m.) SYDNEY, July 13. Sharp differences of opinion among New Zealanders residing in Sydney in regard to social gatherings was revealed last night when a large meeting was convened by New Zealand women’s associations to form a new organisation, of men and women. Several speakers said it was ridiculous that four New Zealand clubs should already attempt to function in Sydney. Strife and discontent socially had existed for years.
Mrs. E. Hempton, .the organising secretary of the New Zealand Club, which is a rival body, said that she was insulted at the door when trying to enter the meeting. She was told that she would not be allowed to attend. Finally she was permitted to do so.
Sir Benjamin Fuller said that there were 30,000 New Zealanders in. Sydney. They should try to live in peace.
The meeting decided to form a new organisation.
Mr. Taylor, the New Zealand Trade Commissioner, was confined to his home owing to indisposition. Speaking by telephone he .stated that he Wanted, to .see one body in Sydney representing New Zealanders, the same as in Melbourne.
