Government Pledges
Sir, —In answer to ttie charge that the Government did not keep its promise to reduce the exchange rale and abolish the sales tax, “Labour" says: (1) The Coalition Government established both. This is the “Who put it on?” or irrelevant answer. (2) His party did not say it would abolish both, but that it would “eventually” abolish them. This- is an incorrect statement of fact. (3) The Coalition Government i'self broke a promise. This is the "You're another” style of argument. (4) A deputation of business men and the Associated Chambers of Commerce asked the Government not to interfere with the exchange and sales tax. This is 'he only one of “Labour’s” four points that merits any serious consideration as an answer to the charge. It seems to me absurd to suppose that any deputation of business men and the Associated Chambers of Commerce ever asked <hc Government not to interfere with the sales tax, but as “Labour” states as a fact that a request was made *o the Government in respect of both the exchange and the sales tax, 1 ask him to supply the source of his information and a source capable of being verified. JUSTITIA.
