TERMS REGRETTED

THREAT OF REPRISAL TIN INDUSTRY INQUIRY AUSTR ALI AN APPLICATION ATTITUDE IN BRITAIN (Elec. Tel. Copyright—United Press Assn.) (Reed. July 12, 3 p.m.) MELBOURNE, July 11. During the hearing of the application before the Commonwealth Tariff Board, in which the Broken Ilill Proprietary Company, Limited, is seeking protection for the tinplate industry that it proposes to establish, reference was made by the chairman of the Tariff Board, Mr. McConnghy, to the statement by the two representatives of British tin plate manufacturers protesting and declaring that if the British manufacturers were excluded from the Australian market every effort wbuld be put forward by the British industry to cause the withdrawal of the preferential treatment enjoyed by some Australian exports, especially canned goods. Mr. McConaghy said that it was regrettable that those who had prepared the British case had used such strong language. The remarks about possible retaliation by Britain had given a lead to people who should not be expected to have the same depth of thought as the leaders of their industry. He added that no industry seemed more natural for development on economic lines in Australia than the tinplate industry.
