WINTER ISLANDS’ CRUISE
FESTIVITIES IN SAMOA FLOWERS AND DANCING (Reed. July 12, 2.15 p.m.) APIA, July 11. The Maunganui, on a winter cruise of the Islands will arrive this afternoon from Tonga ports. Owing to an outbreak of smallpox at Papeete the steamer was diverted from the original route and is now calling at Tonga and Samoa, including Pago Pago, Fiji, and New Caledonia. The Maunganui will remain at Apia until 1 a.m. on Friday. Although the vessel is arriving eight days ahead of schedule the original programme of entertainment for the tourists will be carried out. This includes sightseeing tours, island nights’ entertainment, a flower show, native dances by hospital Samoan nurses and a Roman Catholic Club entertainment. A message received by the Gisborne office of the Union Steam Ship Company from, the cruise ship Maunganui states that the passengers spent a. delightful day at Vavau yesterday. They enjoyed boatjng and swimming, and a picnic alongside a charming Tongan village was followed by a boat trip to the Swallows Cave, in the course of her Island’s cruise the Maunganui arrives at Apia this afternoon.
