Damage estimated at from £4OOI v o £SOOO was caused by a lire which broke out in .a garage owned by Mi C. M. Gordon at Wellsford shortly after 9 o'clock last night, totally destroying the garage and 10 mots: •ars parked inside it and scorching two houses oil adjacent propertiof For over ain hour .a bucket -bi Q r^ fought the fire and were successfu. in preventing it from spreading further. By 10.30 o’clock the fire wa: well under control. There was no wind, a factor which in the absence of a fire brigade, va-s instrumental in confining the serious damage to the garage. At the time of the outbreak there was no one (in attendance at the ■■a rage and the first evidence ot the ire was an explosion of an oxygen vlinder which shot across from the farage and struck the window sill o i neighbouring chemist's shop, sheltering the frame. The vibration from the explosior .vas left miles away at Te Mar.a erne several windows .further down the street were shattered. The fire spread quickly and at 9.21 n.m. a large drum containing oil 101 Diesel engines flared up, the flame being 100 ft. high and creating' a glare which could be seen in Auck.une ’here was a fear that three underground tanks of petrol would als ditch fire. Strenuous efforts were made tc -ave the chemist’s shop next door .vmed by Mr. A. R. Gorbov and Mr Gordon’s residence behind the g.u .172. Water was obtained from tank? it Mr. Gorbey’s shop and goods anr furniture from the endangered buildr.gs were strewn along the road for 100 yards. At the time of the fire, Mr. Gordon was away from Wellsford, bin m. returned at about 10.30 o clock, at which time the flames were under control.
Ten Hungarian policemen have received medals from the Red Cross tr saving over 100 lives each. A bust of pure gold, thought to b' of Hie Reman Emperor, Anthcnv Ilr Pious, who died about 101, has been found in Vaud. Switzerland.
