MAORIS ON THE LAND
SUCCESS AT RUATOKI L’ARTY ATTENDS RUAKURA Among the 32 students attending the farm school at Ruakura are eight Maoris from the Ruatoki settlement, in the Urewera Country. It is the first time that Maoris have attended the farm schools at Ruakura. The party is in the charge of Mr. F. Merrett, supervisor at the Ruatoki settlement, which is one of the largest singleunit Maori settlements in New Zealand.
Mr. Merrett said that Ruatoki was independent. Altogether there were 1000 Maoris on the 31,000 acres. Most of the officers in charge and the foreman and assistant foreman were Maoris. There were 4000 dairy cows on the property, with 100 head of sheep and 400 head of run cattle. Ruatoki made the complete supply of 600 tons to a cheese factory, while another 200 tons went to the Rangitaiki factory.
