BOY SCOUT MOVEMENT
DISTRICT COMMISSIONER RETIREMENT ANNOUNCED DR. DOWfE’S FIXE WORK The retirement of Dr. W. A. Bowie from the position of district commissioner of Boy Scouts after 20 years’ service was announced at the annual meeting of the Boy Scout Association on Saturday evening.
Several speakers, including the acting-commissioner, Mr. D’A. Blackburn and the district secretary, Mr. F. Westcott, referred to the valuable service rendered by Dr. Bowie during his long association with the movement. A warm vote of thanks was passed to Dr. Bowie for his work on behalf of the Boy Scouts.
There was a large gathering of parents and others interested in the movement. The chairman, Mr. H. Holmes, welcomed the parents and said he was pleased to see the interest taken in the organisation. Mr. Blackburn outlined the principles of the movement and the work of the executive. He stated that the past year had been a most encouraging one. During the 12 months the number of Scouts in town had increased from 29 to 79 and the Cubs from five to _B9, while in addition there was an active troop of Sea Scouts. On the Coast there was a troop of Scouts at Ruatoria and another at Tolaga Bay, and each of these centres now had- a Cub pack. Mr. Blackburn referred to the Gisborne executive’s finances and stated that they were in a healthy state.
Election of Officers The election of officers for the ensuing year resulted: —Chairman, Mr. H. Holmes; hon. treasurer, Mr. L. Grey Barton; hon. secretary, Mr. F. Westcott; committee, the Rev. N. F. Benham, Mesdames Muliooly, Hope and H. Holmes, Messrs. T. French, Milligan. C. W. Chamberlain, IT. Hankey, M. Cox, F.. Phillips and Watt; troop representative on the committee, Mr. Horton, Tolaga Bay, Mr. F. W.’ Bean, Mangapapa, the district Scout, nas er. iViV. !. D. Baker, 'and the district Cubmaster, Mr. G. Foote. A discussion took place on the centenary jamboree to be held in December and it was stated that the number of Gisborne Scouts and officers who had: signified their intention of making the trip had exceeded expectations. In all, 79 Scouts and 10 officers would aktend the jamboree. The different committees were working enthusiasticaly to raise funds for camp equipment. Prior to the annual meeting of the association a combined parade was held at which 07 badges' were presented by the district Scoutmaster, Mr. Baker, (for awards covering" the past six month's work. AssistantScout ers. warrants were presented to J. A. Borlase and W. D. Lindsay, of the Mangapapa troup. This gathering also was attended ■by a large number of parents. The boys wore provided wLli supper and afterwards they ai ranged the supper Cables for the guests.
