Rain interfered with this week's county cricket matches and there were few sensational features. Sussex had a striking win over Lancashire, making 44.9 for seven wickets and dismissing their opponents at 148. Cox made 182 and James Langridge ICI for Sussex. Matches commenced on Wednesday resulted as follows: Somerset in the first innings made 127. and in the second 187 (P. Smith five for 07). Essex in the first compiled 354 (Cook 98). Essex won by an innings and 40 runs. Hampshire in the first innings lost two for 50 versus Glamorgan, the game being ;band<red owing to rain. Sussex in the first inning;, put on 449 for seven and declared (Cox 182, James Langridge 101). Lancashire in the first made 148 and followed on to lose three for 173 when rain interfered. Sussex won on the first innings. Surrey in the first innings made 259 (Ilowarth five for 74). In the second they lost nine for 175 and declared. Worcester in the first innings put on 272 for nine and declared (Palmer 84). In the second they lost seven for 103, and won by three wickets.
