SEASON’S SEVENTH DRAW TERRIERS AND EASTERN Territorials 1 goal Eastern Union 1 The seventh drawn -game of the season in the Poverty Bay Football Association's senior competition resulted when Territorials met Eastern Union on Saturday afternoon, the score being one all. Territorials had the services of three outsiders, and Eastern Union staved off defeat only by a late effort. Eastern Union had (the early advantage, but Silvester defended well, and one of his clearing kicks sent the Territorial forwards away on a sustained attack, W. Mulrooney beating the goalkee-per with a hot shot from a free kick. Territorials continued the offensive, until the Eastern forwards broke away, with two wingers, Burns and Barbour, doing some valuable work. Play fluctuated up and down the field until half-time, which was reached with the Territorials one up.
On the resumption, Eastern carried play to the Territorials' end, but W. Mulrooney- and L. Samson broke away to commence a period of alternate' attacks, both Mulrooney and RatclifTe taking shots at their respective ends. For a time, Eastern kept on -the attack, and R. Johnson put the ball over the bar. A few minutes later Burns scored the equaliser with a shot which gave the goalkeeper no chance. The final whistle went soon afterwards without alteration in the score.
Both teams had a strong defence, the goalkeepers, Packman and Silvester, doing some particularly nice work. The forwards on either side lacked the finishing touches, but penetrated well.
MERCANTILE CUP WIN GISBORNE’S SUCCESS The Gisborne Mercantile soccer team's success, in the Mercantile Cup match in Napier on Saturday (reported on page 12) was the result of clever forward and: half-back, play. The Gisborne team had the advantage for the greater part of the game, -and only solid defence on the part of Napier United kept the score down to 4 goals to 2 A. Waugh and McGrory shone in the Gisborne forwards, and in scoring one of his goals Waugh required to beat two opponents before, putting in a shot which gave the goalkeeper no chance. McGrory’s goal was also the result of good play, and he tricked three defenders in his eflor;. The first goal of the match came five minutes after the star.t following a nice movement on the left flank between Waugh and Dunsmore, the latter dropping a lob from 30yds. out. The Mercantile half-backs, Haughton, Hall and Norman-ton, played 'a hard game, and the Napier forwards found -great difficulty in penetrating this line.
WEEK-END MATCHES P. AND T. V. BUFFALOES I*. and T. .. 5 goals Buffaloes 1 During the week-end a team representing -the Post and Telegraph Department defeated an eleven from the Buffaloes Lod-ge, the P. and T. men winning by five goals to one. For the P. and T. Department, Ratcliffe scored three goals and Weir and Deare one each. Folev scored the lodge's only goal. EASTERN & THISTLE DRAW In a friendly game, Eastern Union and Thistle played a drawn game for the fourth occasion this season. Thistle were -the aggressors throughout, but superior combination was shown by the Eastern players. These two teams are (to meet in the League series on Saturday, and in view _of the habit these teams have of playing drawn games much interest is at tached to the match.
