ANTARCTIC EXPEDITION
BYRD TO PROCEED ORDERS OF PRESIDENT (Reed. July 8. 2 p.m.) WASHINGTON, July 7. President Roosevelt has directed Admiral R. E. Byrd to proceed to the Antarctic Parly in October to substantiate claims :to American- territory within the sphere of influence of the Monroe doctrine. Admiral Byrd said he hoped to 'depart before October 15. He added that men at the (bases would remain for a year, when they would probably be replaced. The bases would be equipped by means of aeroplanes using three ships, his own Bear of Oakland, the specially-de-signed coastguard cutter North land, and the iceship North Star, which is at present being used to carry supplies to Alaskan Indians.
