ALLEGATION OF INSULT
ARREST OF ENGINEER HELD BY JAPANESE (Reed. July 4, 9 a.m.) LONDON, July 3. The Japanese army spokesman at Tientsin announced ito-day that gendarmes had arrested and were holding in cusitory at Tientsin, Mr. E. T. Griffiths, a British engineer of the Butterfield Swires Company steamer Yo.chow, for allegedly insulting the Japanese army. The Japanese army spokesman added 1 that an investigation would be made into tire circumstances of the incident reported yesterday, when, it was stated, an Englishman John Anderson, was stripped naked at tile concession barrier at Tientsin and, the Japanese snatched* Ill's passport with Which they slapped Mr. Anderson in* the face.
