DR. BENES’ LETTER

SUPPRESSION BY LEAGUE SOVIET DEMANDS READING! GENEVA, June 20. The Soviet Government now requests that the letter from Dr. E. Benes, the former President of Czechoslovakia, which it sought to have read at the recent meeting of the Council of the League of Nations, shall be brought officially to the notice of the next meeting of the Assembly. M. Maisky, Soviet Ambassador in London, sponsored the letter at the meeting of the council, but his request that it be read was ruled out on the ground that Dr. Banes no longer represented a sovereign State.

The letter protested against Germany’s “mutilation” of Czechoslovakia and Hungary’s occupation of Ruthenia and part of Slovakia. It also reminded member States of their duties to the League.
