Replying to the Labour member, Dr. Hugh Dalton, who spoke of the calm courage and l self-control being displayed by Poland in the face of grave provocation, the Prime Minister, Mr. Neville Chamberlain, .said in the House of -Commons to-day that Britain much appreciated Poland’s attitude. Mr. Chamberlain was answering a question following a statement on the Danzig position in -which he said: “Reliable reports indicate that extensive measures -of a military character are being carried out in the Free City. “Large increasing numbers of German nationals have recently arrived in the Free City, ostensibly as tourists, and a local defence corps is being formed under the name of the Heimwehr. “Poland has received from Germany notification of a visit by the German cruiser Koenigsbeng to Danzig for three days as from August 25. Poland is informing the Danzig Senate that she -sees mo objection to this visit. “Britain is maintaining close contact with Poland -and France regarding the developments .in the Danzig situation."

Invited by a Labour Party questioner .to inform Herr Hitler personally that any attempt -to change the status of Danzig by force would instantly ibe resisted 1 -by Britain, Mr. Chamberlain remarked that Britain’s position bad been made perfectly clear by the Foreign Secretary, Viscount Halifax.

The Independent Cables service reports that a Polish warship will be dispatched to Danzig during the Koenigsberg’s visit.
