DUKE OF KENT

POST IN AUSTRALIA EAGER ANTICIPATION .. , ~.,„.LONDON, June 10. The eagerness with which the Duke arid Duchess of Kent are looking forward to their stay in Australia was revealed by the Duke when he said in a speech to 1200 guests at the dinner of Empire societies: — “It is to be my great good fortune shortly to take up the Gover-nor-Generalship of Australia. My wife and I hope to make personal contacts, as the King and Queen are doing in Canada, with the hundreds of thousands .'of people who - have turned the ideal of a commonwealth of nations into a solid reality. - *

“We shall be there two years, during which we shall have many opportunities of seeing the life of the Commonwealth and ordinary everyday conditions. We shall know by experience Australia’s problems as our own and share her successes, as well as her misfortunes. “As a result of this we shall see from a different angle the solidity of the ties binding the British commonwealth of nations. I shall endeavour to carry on Lord Cowrie’s great work.” The High Commissioner, Mr. S. M. Bruce, in proposing the health of the Duke and Duchess, said that from the evidence of ; his recent visit to Australia they would be assured of a staggering welcome. He emphasised the Commonwealth’s loyalty and affection for the Throne.
