TRAFFIC FILTER

INNOVATION FOR DOMINION FUKEKOHE JUNCTION The reconstruction and bituminismg of the Runciman-Paerata-Pukekohe road, Auckland, embraces the formation of a traffic filter at the junction of this road with the Great South road. It is stated that the filter will be the first of its kind in New Zealand. Its completion will follow the surface sealing of the junction and the widening of the carriageway on the eastern side of the Great South road at R'unciman.

While on its south side the Fukekohe road still joins the Great South road at approximately a right-angle, cu the north side the corner has been replaced by a very long sweep. Thus traffic from the Fukekohe road to go north sweeps gradually on to the concrete paving of the Great South road and is in full view of overtaking traffic coming north along the main highway for some chains before it actually filters into the north-bound line of traffic on the highway. To this extent the filter is already operating, but turning off into the Fukekohe road has yet to be provided for on the correct lines, When the junction is surface sealed, white lines will guide not only the traffic going north, but also mark the course traffic is to take in turning into the Fukekohe road and where overtaking traffic ••continuing southward along the main highway is to ’ aw to the left to pass on. The widening of the carriageway on the eastern side of the Great South road will give a good by-pass for the south-ibound traffic.

It will probably be next sum me before the bitumen sealing is laid the ’filter marked out. Traffic officer, are then to bo present on busy days lc instruct motorists in its use.
