LOST IN DARKNESS El HONG I A THEFT SEQUEL Oil TAKEN FROM SHOE Wheeling away suddenly as lie was being placed in the Te Awamutu lock-up, a Maori who was arrested after a burglary at Pirongia made his escape in darkness in the early hours of Saturday morning. The burglary took place between 4.30 p.m. and 0.30 p.m. on Friday at the butcher's shop of Mr. W. p. Milgate, £3l in notes and a quantity of silver being taken from the till. Mr. A. Shaw, who was in charge of .he shop, left abort? 4.30 p.m., while an assistant went home shortly afterward, having first locked the premises, the intruder .gained entran’ce by tearing away the gauze on top of the door it the back of the building and sliding back the bolt. The till was opened, but evidently the thief was surprised as several coins Were dropped on the floor, as if he had made a hasty departure. As the result of inquiries made during the evening by Sergeant S. G. Clist, of Te Awamutu, a Maori was arrested and taken to the Te' Awamutu lock-up. As Sergeant Clist was opening the door of the cells, the man suddenly broke away and vanished in the darkness. Attempts to recapture him were not successful, as he was apparently well acquainted with the neighbourhood. However, it is considered that he will be recaptured before- long.
Mr. Mi'lgate’s shop was entered about six weeks ago but on that occasion nothing was taken.
