NGAPUHI CANOES

WAIKARE CONSTRUCTION CLOTHING FOR WARRIORS The' Ngapuhi tribe of Nontli Auckland is continuing with the building of its own canoes for pabtieiptutian in tlie centennial' Lsetebnaicions ait Waiitangi. These craft are being built at Waikare, on the Bay of Islands, and are distinct from those that are being constructed at Kerikeri. It has been contended by the Ngapuhi' that a tribe of such importance should build its own craft, more especially as Its .members will be the hosts at tone Wattangi celebrations. The N'gapuhis also state that it was the chiefs of their tribe who first signed the Treaty of Waitangi, and so their tribe should have pride of place alt the centennial celebra.ions.

For these reasons they do not consider that the canoes at Kerikcri, which are being built largely through the efforts of Princess Te Puea, although assisted by the Ngapuhi, can be manned by Ngapuhis. In the construction of .'the Ngapuhi canoes, and the clothing that is being prepared for the warriors who will man them, nothing of the ipakeha iis being used, and the clothing will all be of native ,manufacture from native materials.
