RAILWAY REVENUE PERIOD TO END OF MAY An increase of £(>3,00(5 in working profit, compared with the result i'or tiie corresponding period last year, is shown by the accounts of the Railway Department for the four weeks ended May 27, an abstract of which was published in the Gazette last week. The net revenue was £110,298, against £53,292 last year, and £40,245 in 1937. The gross revenue for the whole system was £807.728 an increase of £88,530, and the expenses were £091,430, an increase of £25,524

The operating profit on the North Island railways was £02,545, or £38,982 more than last year, while that in the South Island increased by £25,241 from £3943 to £29,184. In the North Island gross revenue increased by £47,000 lo £427,709, and expenses' by £BOIB to £305,224. In the South Island Hie revenue of £271,859 was £24.707 higher, while expenses decreased by £474 to £242,075. Net revenue from other than railway services was £24,509, a decrease of £1217. The gross revenue was £IOB,IOO and the expenditure £83,531. The net revenue for the two periods to May 27 this year was £222,352, compared with £152,095 last year, an increase of £70,257. The gross revenue was £1,585,319, an increase of £109,074, while the working expenses were £1,302,907, or £38,817 snore than in 1938.
