BANQUET FOR MINISTERS
COMMEMORATIVE DINNER WAIROA GATHERING (Herald Special Reporter). To commemorate the opening of the Wairoa-Napier section of the East Coast railway, the local bodies of file Wairoa district tendered a banquet to the Minister of Railways, the Hon. D. G. Sullivan, and to the Minister of Public Works, the Hon. R. Semple, in Wairoa on Saturday evening. There was a large and representative gathering, including representatives of local bodies frgm Gisborne, Hastings and Napier, and officials of the Railway and Public Works Department's. Tlhe - Mayor of Wairoa, Mr. H. L. Harker, presided. Tlie following toast list was honoured: “The King," proposed by the chairman: “The Government,” proposed by Mr. A. T. Carroll, chairman of the Wairoa Conuty Council, and responded to by the Hon. D. G. Sullivan, Minister of Railawys, and the Hon. R. Semple, Minister of Public Works; “The Parliament of New Zealand,” proposed by Mr. S. M. Ashburn, chairman of the Wairoa Chamber of Commerce, and responded by Mr. E. L. Cullen, M.P., and Mr. D. W. Coleman, M.P.; “The Public Works Department,” proposed by Mr. C. V. Chamberlain, chairman of tile Wairoa Power Bbard, and responded to by Mr. J. Wood, Engin-eer-in-Chief of the Public Works Department; “The New Zealand Government Railways,” proposed by the Mayor of Wairoa, and responded to by Mr. G. H. Mackley, general manager of railways; and "Local Bodies," proposed by Mr. E. L. Cullen, M.P., and responded to by Mr. A. T. Carroll, chairman of the Waicoa County Council, Mr. J. M. Taylor, chairman of the Wairoa Hospital Board, and Mr. J. Corkill, chairman of the Wairoa Harbour Board.
