MORE MARIST KICKERS
LONG RANGE EFFORTS SMILER & McGRANNACHAN GOALS FROM ALL ANGLES Marist 18pts. Celtic 3 In the absence of Matt, O'Brien, Marist supporters were somewhat chary as to the kicking ability oi their side on Saturday, but from the outset it was proved in conclusive manner that there were other men in the team who could find the uprights just <as easily as the champion goalkicker. Celtic, losers to Marist in this game, fought hard all the way, but the winners had more finish In the rearguard and had an easy win. The appearance of the American player, Goodwill, was watchtd with interest, and the newcomer to the side will prove an asset when he acquires .a better knowledge of the game. He 'gave a good defensive display. Play did not favour his wing on attack. From the kick-off Marist showed that they had plenty of goal-kickers, ■a penalty kick from half-way by Wyn. Smier hitting an upright, then the ■cross-bar and falling back into the field of play. Goal From a Mark Marist were the first to attack, but j excellent handling and kicking by I Malone, the green full-back, put the Celts back into the running. Celtic were securing the ball from the scrums and the Marist inside backs were not tackling low, giving the fullback. Moughan. plenty of work. With Chris. Anderson and Wrightson prominent, the blue pack swept down field' to the white line, where Anderson and McGrannachan tried to force thenway across, but the defence held. Fielding a clearing kick, Hoy marked in front of the posts and, with Heeney holding the .bail, place-kicked a neat goal to open the score.—Marist 3, Celtic 0. The sensation of tile game followed shortly afterwards. Rogers and Kani Pore, fed by W. McKinley, took play to 1 blue territory but Pore dropped bis pass. The ball went 1o Moughan. ; and the full-back kicked up to ! Malone. The latter tried to find the line, bid, 45yds. out and close to the side-line, McGrannachan, the Marist ' forward, fielded the ball and dropkicked the best field--mM «een on Oval this season. —Marist 7. Old 1 B °Y S °- ,
The blues scored again immediately following the drop-out. Tibbie, backing up his rearguard, took a pass from M. Smiler, and after a good run sent the ball on to Hoy, the latter running 35yds. to score right in the corner. ; Wyn. Smiler was thought to have little chance of the conversion, but his kick from the side-line sailed over the posts with the height of the posts again to spare—-a remarkable kick. —Marist 12, Celtic 0. Celtic took a turn on attack and were nearly over when Moughan was caught in possession, but Goodwill had •shown a ready appreciation of the position and, well back to support his full-back, he took a pass from Moughan and saved well. Celtic were not to be denied, however, and when Goodwill was penalised for off-side, Reg. McKinley kicked a “sitter.”— Marist 12/Celtic 3. Smart Smiler Trio Soon after half-time Marist scored again, this time through the agency of the Smiler trio. W. Smiler shot through an opening near half-way and
gave the ball to his brother Tom who, supported by three Marist men, carried on and passed to M. Smiler, the last-mentioned scoring near the posts. McGrannachan missed the “sitter.”--Marist 15, Celtic 3. Another break-through by T. Smiler looked dangerous, but the movement was unsupported and broke down and, ■with O’Connor and Baker to the fore, Celtic took play to Marist territory, •where Moughan twice marked well to •save. Play was sweeping up and down the field at a great pace, Hccney, in one instance, being nearly over but being checked' by Malone. It was now Celtic’s turn to launch an attack, •and down the field came play for Kani Pere (to go over, but lie was recalled for an infringement.
