Auckland, Jan. 80. The Magisterial enquiry into the wreck of the Gairlock was opened. The Collector of Customs said that the apparent cause was inefficient sieeriug and want of sufficient supervision of the conduct of the man at the wheel and look-out men or exceptionally dark, thek night. If this was proved by evidonce, Captain Austen would appear by implication, guilty of negleet in navigation, as he was on derk a long time previous and at tha tim9 of the vessel striking. Suspected Meg \ Operation. Chbhtchurch, Jan. 30. A girl, M*ud Harris, wus admitted to the Hospital on "Wednesday and died today from blood-poisoning. It is suspected that an illegal operation had b:en attempted. The police are enquiring. Band Contest for 1904. Jan 30. A meeting of the citizens was held this J.fternoon to consider the project for holding the 1904 contest of the North Island Bands' Association at Gisborne. The Mayor presided and the meeting was enthusiastic. A Committee was appointed <o obtain signatures to guarantee the amount of JE2SO. It being suggested, in (i very short, time the Committee h*d obtained a guarantee for considerably over the amount. In was stated that the delegates two years ago had put in a claim ro have the contest at Gisborne in 1904.
Drowning Accident. Hokitika, Jan. 30. Francis Itabeck, a young mau of 19 •years, son of the well-known hairdresser Of this town, was eccldenially drowned j-bis afternoon in Lake Mabinapua. The bedy was recovered this evening.
