OUR DUNEDIN TELEGRAMS.

Retirement of Commissioner Tunbridge. (Special to "Stab',). Donedin, This Day. Mrs Edward Martin, who died at J the residence of her son-in-law, Mr Moore, the Mayor of Milton, was a very old identity of Tokomairiro District. She arrived in Dunedin in 1849, a year later marrying the late Edward Martin, of the New Zealand Survey Company, and has been settled in the Tokomairiro since 1851. In editorially announcing the retirement of Commissioner Tunbridge, the "Star" says it is only fair to say that the experience of the last five years affords striking testimony tojthe practical sagacity of Mr Seddon's judgment in selecting Mr Tunbridge as Commissioner of Police, when in London in 1897. The members of the polica force will be losing a chief whoso friendliness and care for them have taken a thoroughly practical form, and whom they have mainly to thank for the institution of the excellent provident fund. A kean disciplinarian, Tunbridge has shown himself to be a man of finely humane temperament, and we know of no instant of failure on his part in the smaller but still impor; ant matters of tact and discretion. Hi 3 too brief < official career in Now Zealand i 3 to terminate on March 31st, but he has done the State excellent service, and the best wishes of the people for his future happiness and welfare will accompany him when he leaves these shores.
